Weekly Update: September 28-October 4

This past week has been spent in reflection of the progress so far and where I see Vegan in Wyoming going. I am really excited about this post and everything that I’m going to be sharing. As many people know, the opportunity presented itself and I took off. I had no idea that this would turn into a business venture, but more importantly I didn’t have a single clue how many people I would find that were interested in what I was doing.

Over the course of the last two months, I have met over 20 vegans that live in Casper. That is absolutely amazing considering only a year ago I didn’t know a single one. That is the exact problem. Everyone I talk to only knows a handful of other vegans and there isn’t a community out there. Living here in meat and potatoes country, I believe many people just don’t talk about veganism to others and so nobody gets to know each other. I have quickly realized that I wanted to change that.

People want to know what I’m trying to do when I’m at the markets and I’m wished luck by many by passers, but I had to sit down and really ask myself why I was doing what I was doing. It isn’t something that came overnight to me. It is something that I have had to do a lot of reflection on and talk to some other people about. I finally feel like I know what I want Vegan in Wyoming to be!

First of all, I want to show everyone that vegan food can be delicious and it isn’t just for vegans. That is a common misconception that people have. I have a lot of people pass my table and quietly say that they aren’t vegan or they sarcastically say comments like “I like my meat!” What they don’t know is that anyone can have a vegan cupcake and it doesn’t taste any different (if not better than non vegan counterparts)! Second, I want to make vegan meals and desserts accessible to everyone. I want to show people how easy it is to be vegan. I have been doing it in Wyoming for years and I haven’t starved to death or ever had a hard time finding food even before we had a Natural Grocers. For those who don’t cook much, I want to be able to provide meals that are affordable and appealing to everyone even the carnivores. Basically I want to do anything I can to make it easier for people. Third, I want to bring people together. Based on everyone I have talked to, nobody really knows many vegans around here. I want to bring the community together so nobody feels alone anymore. I know I spent over seven years feeling totally alone and I don’t want anyone to feel that way. I want to be able to bring the over 20 vegans I know together to show all of us that there are more of us out there than anyone believes. As an effort to kick start that, I am going to start monthly interviews with local vegans and feature their story on the blog. Lastly, I don’t want to become some big business with a set plan written out. I don’t ever want to have a business plan. I know things will change and grow as they’re supposed to and I can’t force my vision into anything that it isn’t. All I can hope for is that I am making an impact on peoples lives in a positive way. Any income I make is a bonus. Of course I hope to get to the point where I can do this full time and support myself, but as long as I can help others I am more than content.

Of course Vegan in Wyoming is more than I can put into words but for those wondering, this is why I do what I do. I’m really excited about where things are going and I will have some new things to share next week, but they’re still in progress right now!

    I had no idea there were that many vegans in this area–that’s amazing! And I’m really excited to see what you do with your business and your blog!

    1. It has been amazing meeting so many people, I had an idea there were people out there but wasn’t sure how to find them all.
