Product Review: Follow Your Heart Smoked Gouda Slices

I guess I keep hoping there is some amazing vegan cheese out there that I can easily get at local grocery stores. I have heard a lot of good things about the Follow Your Heart gouda, so when I found these smoked gouda slices, I was excited! I have heard people rave about this cheese for the last year or so, but I hadn’t been able to find them until recently. Despite all of the excitement and anticipation to try this, I was a little skeptical though. I tried the Follow Your Heart cheddar, and it was pretty awful. I couldn’t even finish the package. I had also tried their American cheese and it had great flavor but took forever to melt, and honestly I wasn’t willing to wait 20 minutes for a grilled cheese.

When I opened the package, I immediately noticed the smoky aroma. It was very fragrant. I thought it would be too overpowering. I tried a slice raw, and it was actually really good. It had a nice texture and the flavor was slightly smoky, but it still had a nice cheesy flavor. I decided to test the meltability on a vegan version of poutine. It melted fairly quick. It only took a couple of minutes in the oven. I really liked the flavor when it was melted and soft. It didn’t quite have the cheese pull I was looking for. It really was just melted and soft and not much else. I was hoping it would melt down more and coat everything better, but it didn’t do that. The next test was to melt it into a dish. Once again, it melted very quick. After a bit of stirring, a very strange thing happened though. The cheese basically disappeared after being melted and stirred. The flavor was still there, but there wasn’t any cheese to be found. I thought that was very odd and didn’t really appeal to me.

This was yet another cheese that was made from coconut oil, like the Violife. Thats probably a big reason why I enjoyed the texture so much. It had a lot of food starches to stabilize it, which is very common in non-dairy cheeses. To my surprise, it was one of the cheeses with a smaller ingredient list.

Overall, I liked this cheese. It had good flavor, good texture, and most importantly it was available at my local Natural Grocers. I didn’t love how it melted, but I think it would go really well with a cheese plate! I definitely think it’s worth a try! I know I am glad I decided to pick it up. As always, this isn’t a sponsored post. I am just trying to show people what is available in my local stores.

I recently located this, too, and enjoyed it! I didn’t like the other FYH cheeses I have tried prior to this either. I didn’t try melting it much…but I liked it on sandwiches and stand alone as a side or snack! I agree with you on many levels!

    1. I’m glad you feel the same way! Sometimes I feel crazy when I see all of these people raving about every single FYH product and I don’t feel the same way at all!
