Lately, I have been asked about vegan snack suggestions more often than I ever thought I would. Most people know what to eat for meals, but when it comes to grab-and-go snack options, a lot of people become lost. This review is my attempt to start chipping away at that question. For starters, I snack a lot! I am more or less constantly hungry. Six out of seven days in a week, I am busy running around between grocery shopping, cooking meals for people, making deliveries, taking care of weekly appointments in my personal life, and actually running. I always keep a plentiful supply of snacks around, because I know I will need something in the middle of the day. Most of the time, I just eat dried fruit and nuts, but some people find that boring and too obvious. This week, I decided to review a product that combines two of my favorite things, dried fruit and coconut!
I first discovered the Barnana products about a year and a half ago. I first saw them at Natural Grocers, then at Albertson’s. I was instantly intrigued because I knew I loved regular dried banana. When I saw that they had flavors like dark chocolate, peanut butter, and coconut, I was sold! I have to be honest, I had no idea what the brand was until today, though. The front of the package is a little strange to read, so I never really paid that close of attention to what it was actually saying. I just knew what I was getting because the rest of the package is so recognizable. I think it is actually more important to have a package that is very distinct, that way consumers can catch a quick glance of the package on the shelf and know they’re getting the right thing. On the other had, if I’m looking for a specific brand and the packaging is average, then it’ll be harder for me to find exactly what I’m looking for.
As far as a processed product, this is as simple as it gets! There are two ingredients: banana and coconut. I was very excited to see that there wasn’t anything weird in them. I knew they couldn’t be bad with the ingredients, but as always, I had to see for myself. Upon opening the package, I was a little shocked. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect, but I wasn’t expecting little brown squares. They weren’t just a little brown, they were almost black, and I was a little skeptical at first. I had eaten dried bananas before and they were usually the color of regular bananas, so I expected them to be a lighter color. After I tried one, I was instantly hooked! They were chewy, perfectly sweet, and the coconut added nice balance. The coconut added texture, while slightly breaking up the sweetness of the banana. It was a great choice to break up the monotony of the dried fruit I had been snacking on!
I would definitely recommend these as a snack option for those who are struggling. Here in Casper, it is so easy to pick a bag of these up. They are now at most grocery stores. They are a healthy alternative to most other snack options, but more exciting than trail mix!
