Tip of the Week: Try New Products

I must admit, I do not make everything from scratch. Throughout my vegan life, I have gone through phases where won’t eat vegan processed food products. Over the past few years, I have come to realize that they can be a very useful and good thing. A lot of people’s minds will close when they hear anything about a pre-made food product, but they aren’t all a bad. Vegan products have grown and changed a lot over the last few years, and they’re finally at a point where good options are much more readily available! We are no longer limited to the highly processed “Tofurky” or “Tofutti” products that have been around for years! I typically steer clear of those things, but there are a few great options out there full of real ingredients and real flavor!

To begin, when I am talking about a “pre-made food product”, I’m not just talking about microwave dinners or vegan burgers. There are a lot of different companies that are filling the need for products that not only taste and look like their non-vegan counterparts, but they are made from real, whole ingredients. Just because something is already packaged, doesn’t mean it is bad. For example, Rip Esselstyn has his line of “Engine 2” products, which are made from all whole foods. Most of the time, products aren’t made with quality ingredients like that, but now there are more and more options in stores that provide better foods! With a little bit of label reading and research, I find a lot of products full of whole food ingredients. Through my curiosity and research, I have also found many products by smaller companies that use much more ethical practices.

The main reason I choose to share this tip is because it is unrealistic for every single person to cook every component of each meal. Whether it is something as simple as a carton of almond milk, or as complex as a packaged cashew cheese, having a go to option in a pinch is always necessary! I know this from living a busy life. 90% of the time, I will try to make everything homemade from seitan to vegan mozarella. I have those times when I just need a break, and that package of Miyoko’s Kitchen Mozzarella is necessary  for my sanity!
