Product Review: Plant Snacks–Beet with Vegan Goat Cheese

Over the past two months, I have heard a lot of buzz about these beet with vegan goat cheese chips. During the Natural Products Expo West, back in March a lot of people were posting about them on social media. I didn’t think that they would make it to Casper this quickly, but to my surprise, I found them in the chip aisle while I was walking through Natural Grocers! I knew I had to pick these up! I was really excited since there had been a lot of hype over the product, but I had no idea what they would taste like.

When I was walking around the grocery store, these popped out at me. I had seen the packaging a lot online, and it wasn’t something unfamiliar to me. I was just shocked to see the product here already. The bag looks nice. It looks like one of those things that is kind of fancy, but also simple enough for an everyday snack. The picture of the bright pinkish-red chips is really what caught my eye. I immediately knew what these were when I saw that picture on the bag. I honestly didn’t realize that they were made out of cassava flour until I bought them. For a flavored chip, the ingredients were pretty simple, though. They contained the cassava flour, sunflower oil, tapioca maltodextrin, salt, nutritional yeast, natural/organic flavors, lactic acid, garlic/onion powder, spices, beet, and rosemary extract. They weren’t the healthiest snack ever, but the nutrition facts were about average for a chip or cracker. When I opened the bag, I was slightly disappointed that it wasn’t filled very much. The bag was probably only one-third full. I guess there were five servings in there somewhere. At the same time, I didn’t care too much, since I knew I wouldn’t be trying to make a meal out of them.

When it came to the taste test, I just decided to eat them without any dip, straight out of the bag. They had a different texture than I expected. I guess I expected something more along the lines of a corn chip, and these seemed more like a cracker. The beets gave it a subtle sweetness, which was nice. I tasted the tang and slight funkiness of the goat cheese flavor, but to be honest, I have no idea what goat cheese tastes like. I thought that it would be a stronger flavor. It wasn’t, but I liked that because it let the flavor of the beets come through. They managed to capture the essence of the goat cheese flavor without being too much.

Overall, I liked this product. I liked that the flavors weren’t too strong or overpowering. I was surprised at the texture, but once I got over it and thought of these more as crackers, then they weren’t as disappointing. I will definitely be getting these again, and I would recommend them to anyone who is searching for another snacking option!
